Letters, telegrams, memoranda and notes relating to Belgian refugees in Ireland. Irish Fr Provincial Thomas V. Nolan SJ was a member of the Distribution Committee ‘appointed by the Local Government Board to look after the welfare and distribution of the Belgian Refugees arriving in Dublin’. Most of the letters comprise offers to house refugees or concern schemes to aid them, both physically and spiritually. Includes:
– letter from Dr Bernard Coyne, Bishop of Elphin (1913-1926) to Lady Moloney seeking her assistance in the securement of a disused barracks in order to provide shelter for Belgian refugee families (21 Oct. 1914, 1p.);
– bills from drapers and household stores for items purchased for the refugees;
– letters relating to troubles between Protestants and the Catholic refugees in Portadown;
– letters to Fr Nolan from refugees and members of the Belgian Refugees Committee;
– lists of names and locations of refugees in Ireland and names and addresses of people who housed refugees.

On 17 October 1914, the Father Provincial of the Irish Province of the Society of Jesus, Thomas V. Nolan, received a letter from the Local Government Board to go down to the North Wall at 7.30am on the 18th and meet the 100 Belgian refugees ‘and one hundred each of the following days’. This was due to ‘a few of your Order, who speak Flemish’. Subsequently, the Irish Provincial became a member of the Distribution Committee which looked after the welfare and distribution of refugees arriving in Ireland. The Irish Jesuits received offers to house the refugees and organised schemes to aid them, both physically and spiritually.

The Bishop told me it would be well to know as if there was no expectation of him that the matter should be broken to his poor mother.'

Document from Mr Daniel O'Connell SJ regarding the history and use of a Plössl telescope, which was in use at Clongowes Wood College SJ. Mr O'Connell was studying at Valenburg aan de Geul, Netherlands at this time, where they had been using a Plössl telescope, so he was able to get information to write this document on the history and use of such a telescope. A file relating to Fr Bartholomew Esmonde SJ missionary work in Malta. Includes documents relating to religious instruction of Catholics, descriptions of clerical controversy, disputes with Protestants, conversions of Protestants to Catholicism, preaching, Catholic education, addresses presented to the Governor of Malta, Fr Esmonde's Journal describing his time in Malta, correspondence. Letters are addressed to Fr Esmonde at San Calcedonia, outside Valletta. This house belonged to the Sicilian Province and Malta had a close connection with the Sicilian Province. Letter from Fr Al. Simpson SJ, Stonyhurst College, England to Fr Patrick Bracken SJ. Congratulates the latter on the quality of his French, and corrects some errors that appeared in his letter. Refers to Fr Peter Kenney SJ and his imminent arrival in Stonyhurst. Also discusses the Jesuit presence in France, and their establishment of ‘petits seminaires’ there. Announces his departure for Paris in September. (In French).

A file of House Consultor letters from Fr James Daly SJ, Clongowes Wood College SJ to Irish Fr Provincial Thomas V Nolan. These letters are written by Fr Daly to the Irish Fr Provincial on a variety of matters concerning the community and college. Fr Daly was at the time the Prefect of Studies to 1917 and also a House Consultor. Most are the regular bi-annual letters written to Fr Provincial by House Consultors in each community. Fr Daly's health began to deteriorate in 1917 and he was changed to Coláiste Iognáid SJ for one year as a teacher. He was reassigned to the Clongowes Wood College community in 1918, and his mission was to care for his health. He spent some time over these years at St John of God's, Stillorgan, Dublin, from where he wrote the final letter (22 December 1920, 2pp).

A file of letters from Fr Joseph Wrafter SJ, Clongowes Wood College SJ to Irish Frs Provincial James Murphy (to 1905), John Conmee (from 1905) and John Fahy SJ (from February 1922). These letters are written by Fr Wrafter to the Irish Fr Provincials on a variety of matters concerning the community and college. Fr Wrafter was at the time the Minister and also a House Consultor. Most are the regular bi-annual letters written to Fr Provincial by House Consultors in each community.

A file of letters from Fr Laurence Kieran SJ, Clongowes Wood College SJ to Irish Frs Provincial Thomas Nolan SJ (to Februrary 1922) and John Fahy SJ (from February 1922).
These letters are written by Fr Kieran to the Irish Fr Provincial on a variety of matters concerning the community and college, often about the behaviour of the students, and some practical matters, such as the implications of a lack of coal supply. Fr Kieran was at the time the Prefect of Studies and also a House Consultor. Most are the regular bi-annual letters written to Fr Provincial by House Consultors in each community. Some of these were written at the behest of Fr Charles Mulcahy SJ, Rector of Clongowes Wood College SJ (1919-1922) and Fr John Joy SJ (1922 ff).

Letter from Charles Russell, Maynooth College, County Kildare to his mother (Anne McEvoy) telling her about his life as a student at Maynooth. Describes his day when he rises at 6 o'clock and the various chores he must attend to. Remarks 'We have a great deal of praying to do here.' Continues 'The lay college is quite separate from the Ecclesiastic and it is one of the rules not to hold any intercourse with those in the other college.'

Letter from Charles Russell, Maynooth College, County Kildare to his sister Anne Russell. Remarks that there was an eclipse of the sun 'I observed it very accurately. When I saw it first a very small segment was obscured but in a short time more than one third was covered. I never had a perfect idea of an eclipse until today. Describes what it is like to be studying in Maynooth. Remarks that he has a bad place in the study hall as the people around him talk. Refers to his room 'I am beginning already to feel the cold at night. I suppose it is because my curtains are so bad if they may be called curtains which are all full of holes and as thin as wafer.' Includes a xerox copy of the letter.

Letter from Chichester Parkinson Fortescue, Irish Office, London to Dr. Charles Russell concerning grants paid to Maynooth College and the '[over issuing]' of money. Remarks that he discussed the matter with Mr Gladstone 'Mr Gladstone's answer is that it is a question of law and that the Audit [Committee]...discovered an illegal issue of public money...'.

Letter from Daniel O'Connell, politician, of Merrion Square, Dublin to James C Bacon of 27, Temple Street, Dublin asking for £60 to be placed in the Clongowes Wood College SJ account. In his letter he refers to the "Education Society" in Kildare Place - known as the Kildare Place School - who received government funding of £6,000 per annum, "to educate the Irish poor without distinction of sect or persuasion and employ the money in the most scandalous attempts at proselytism". He asks for Mr Bacon's support in ensuring that this situation is no longer allowed to continue.

Letter from Florence E Quirke, General Secretary, Association of Secondary Teachers Ireland, 33 South Frederick Street, Dublin to Irish Fr Provincial John R MacMahon SJ, St Francis Xavier's, Upper Gardiner Street, Dublin concerning the dismissal of Mr R O'Connor from his teaching position in Clongowes Wood College SJ, and stating that "it will be unnecessary for Mr R O'Connor to proceed with the appeal against his dismissal..." (1p). Attached to this letter is a formal document entitles "Procedure in Dismissal of Lay Secondary Teacher and Appeal from Such Dismissal" (1p).

Letter from Fr Alfred Weld SJ, writing from Fiesole, to Irish Fr Provincial Nicholas Walsh SJ. Reports that he has come into possession of ‘some good relics’, and undertakes to send some to Ireland. Refers to Fr Carbery's health, and asserts that a new rector for Clongowes should be appointed as soon as possible. Also refers to Fr Ronan, and the decorations in his church, and to [W] Lynch. Comments on the fact that ‘someone in England has written strongly against the London University’.

Letter from Fr. E.[P.] Barry, writing from Miltown Malbay, County Clare, to Fr Patrick Bracken SJ, Vice Provincial. Asks for permission to establish the Confraternity of the Sacred Heart in his district.

Letter from Fr Carlo Piccirillio SJ, St Peter Canisius House, Rome, Italy to Fr Assistant John Ffrench SJ on presentation of "l'indirizzo e l'obolo del Convitti irlandese" (address and offering) from Clongowes Wood College SJ to Pope Pius IX. He indicated that Pope Pius IX conferred "la facoltà dell'ingulgenza" (the faculty of indulgence) on all the fathers at Clongowes. He also indicates that he will write of this to Fr Daniel Jones SJ, Socius to the Irish Provincial. Fr John Ffrench was Fr General's English Assistant.

Letter from Fr Charles Aylmer SJ, Rome, Italy to Fr Matthew Gahan SJ, Clongowes Wood, Naas, Kildare concerning domestic issues in Rome. Refers to a group of Polish fathers who are destined for Clongowes but remarks that he does not know when they will commence their journey. Refers to the General Congregation and the naming of the new Fr. General. Remarks 'You have no idea of all the imbroglios which I have witnessed here; men are men everywhere. I have so little that could edify you on the subject that I judge it more prudent not to enter upon it.' Asks to be remembered to members of the community in Clongowes Wood.

Letter from Fr Edmund O'Reilly SJ, Clongowes Wood College, County Kildare to Dr Charles Russell concerning the religious upbringing of the children of William Bliss. Offers his opinion on the case. Remarks 'Something depends on the age of the children. The eldest girl, being fit for school is probably old enough to be in danger of becoming a thorough Protestant under the mother's care.' Continues 'He (William Bliss) ought without delay to appoint a testamentary guardian and to take care the document is all right in it's form and execution....'.

Letter from Fr Edward Kelly SJ, Rector, Clongowes Wood College SJ to Irish Fr Provincial James Tuite SJ concerning the financial difficulties of Clongowes Wood College SJ. Remarks 'Our condition is deplorable and we are really at a stand still. We are in want of everything.' Describes the situation and asks for help from the Province. Concludes '…the necessity for raising some money £1,000 at all events is most urgent and cannot be escaped without great loss to the college…' (Fr Kelly was a Provincial Consultor of longstanding at this time).
