Jesuit Chaplains to Irish emigrants in Britain

In the late 1940s, Fr Leonard Sheil SJ (1897-1968) travelled to Britain in an effort to serve Irish emigrants. Fr Sheil was a familiar sight on his motorbike visiting building sites, construction camps, mines, steel works, oil refineries and industrial hostels. Frs Matthew Meade (1912-1992) and Kevin Laheen (1919-2019) also provided missions.

Letter from Fr Alfred Weld SJ, writing from St. Beuno's College, Wales to [ ]. Reports on the health of Mr Francis Ryan SJ (b.1844), and reports that he be removed to Ireland, so as to be near to a doctor. States that he has written to the [English] Fr Provincial ‘about the laybrother’, but he has not heard yet whether he may receive him. Adds that the Fr Provincial is proposing to send them [in St. Beuno's] ‘two of the superannuated Brothers’. Refers to the health of other residents: Hughes, O’Connor, O'Flynn and Daly. Suggests that his correspondent communicate with Fr (Robert) Whitty (Fr Provincial) in relation to ordinations of Irish men.

Apart from considerations of poverty, I cannot see that the closing of Emo is any occasion for festivity. After all, Emo is being closed because God does not see fit to bless the Province as at present being run with sufficient vocations to justify keeping it open.' (27 August 1969, 3pp). A file relating to the will of Matilda O'Donnell in which she bequeathed the residue of her property to her trustees and executors, Fr. Thomas V. Nolan SJ and Fr Michael Browne SJ, Upper Gardiner Street, Dublin. The file contains extensive background material that appears to have little to do with the Society of Jesus and their bequest. However, as Frs. Nolan and Browne were appointed as trustees and executors of the will it may have been necessary to acquaint themselves fully with Miss Matilda O'Donnell's affairs.
