A file of letters from Fr Thomas Gartlan SJ to Irish Fr Provincial concerning the Australian Mission, his position as Rector of St Ignatius College, Riverview, Sydney (appointed 15 July 1913). Includes a letter referring to the seismological observatory. Remarks that capable men are needed to take charge of the observatory '...Fr Pigot is doing his best to get away - to Japan I think - and in any case - though very capable - he is such a bundle of nerves - that he cannot deal properly with any assistant he engages to help him. In consequence of this and his own very indifferent health - the observatory work is hopelessly in arrears. Moreover for want of funds we have been unable to roof in properly the seismological tunnel...' (24 August 1911, 4pp).
