Thomas Moore Centenary concerts

Programmes and advertisements for, and correspondence regarding the concerts. The programmes give details of the playlist of the concerts, which sometimes feature celebrity singers, such as Joseph McNally (tenor) and Michael O'Duffy (lyric tenor). The correspondence includes a letter from Michael O'Duffy in relation to the arrangements for his performance (13 September 1952, 1 page),

'Some reminiscences of the College of the Sacred Heart, Crescent Limerick of October 1864 and of Aug. 1884 - to August 1887' by Fr James Daly SJ. Addressed to Fr Potter. Account of his visit with his father to the Crescent in 1864, before entering the Society, and an account of later years spent there.

School plays at the Sacred Heart College, Limerick

Programmes, newspaper notices, invitations, tickets, and reviews relating to theatricals, including comedies, tragedies, operettas, librettos and pantomimes, staged by pupils of the Sacred Heart College. Includes a bound copy of a programme for the Crescent College pantomime of 1901, presented by 'Miss Claire Hanrahan in 1955' to the Crescent College. Also includes some correspondence, including a letter from Fr William Lockington SJ (16 February 1907; 1 page) a [draft] letter in Irish advising participation in a festival of Gaelic drama (nd.; 1 page), for which there is also a newspaper review from 10 March 1945. Reviews of the three pages staged in the years 1858, 1963 and 1964 are to be found respectively in three copies of 'Our Catholic Life', a quarterly magazine of the Diocese of Limerick. Some correspondence re. plays and performances is also included.

Past pupils' theatricals and Old Crescent Players

Documents regarding the theatricals staged by the College's past pupils, who came to be known as the Old Crescent Players. Includes programmes and an undated newspaper review of 'The Strong Are Lonely', which was based on the experience of the Jesuit missionaries to Paraguay.

Includes handwritten notes from meetings, as well as correspondence between Fr Gubbins SJ (former Rector of the Crescent) and Fr Roche SJ (present Rector). Also includes a printed notice of a meeting of the OCBA, at which its possible winding up is to be discussed.

Deaths and anniversaries of non-Jesuit clergy

Includes documents announcing the deaths and anniversaries of ex-Cresentians - newspaper articles and announcements, letters etc. Also includes obituaries from magazines and other publications, eg. articles on Canon John Hayes, founder of Muintir na Tire, are to be found in the Christmas 1956 edition of 'Catholic Life', and in the February 1957 edition of 'Landmark'.

'Crescent Time' shows and personality concerts

Includes programmes, newspaper reviews and adverts, and correspondence in relation to individual events, as well as a ledger entitled 'Crescent Times'. 'Crescent Time' programmes detail the performances and format of the evening, which includes songs, theatricals, comedy routines, raffles, 'Question Time' etc; Personality Concert programmes display a photograph of the main attraction: singers and musicians, such as Michael Joyce, Patrick McManus, Francois d'Albert etc, and give details of the format of the evening. The ledger contains an alphabetical index and handwritten entries, as well as various insertions, some of which are glued onto pages, and some of which are loose. The index contains names and contact details of performers and other professionals associated with the theatre and performing. The main body of the ledger contains accounts in relation to individual shows, not only for the 'Crescent Time' and personality concerts, but also Centenary concerts. The insertions include programmes, notices, newspaper reviews, letters etc. Correspondence includes letters from performers in relation to arrangements, from the compere Conn Shanahan, from others involved in the productions, as well as from those to whom free tickets were sent.

Counsel's opinion re. proposed purchase of Jones's field

Four versions of William Binchy’s opinion re. the ‘Lands near Dooradoyle’. Response to the Case for counsel issued by the Vendors’s solicitors (Jonesfield/3). Concludes that the Querists (Jesuit fathers of the Crescent) would not be adequately protected by any Indemnity. Accompanied by a covering letter from Dundon & Treacy, solicitors, which also refers to the Crescent playing field and Mrs Pearse's position regarding it.

Concerts in aid of the Building Fund for Crescent Hall

Documents relating to three shows organised in order to raise money for the Building Fund: 'A Royal Jester', an operetta produced by the past and present pupils of the Presentation Convent on 22-23 January 1953, 'An Tostal' charity concert on 19 April 1953; and a concert on 8 November 1953, featuring the singers Rita Dwan, Delia Murphy, Joseph McNally and Leo McGuire. Includes programmes, newspaper articles and ads, notices, andnother documents relevant to the performances.

Centenary of the Sacred Heart College and Church

Documents relating to the events organised in 1959 to celebrate the centenary of the return of the Jesuits to Limerick. Includes invitations to a 'Triduum of Thanksgiving' in the Sacred Heart Church, of which the Pontifical High Mass was celebrated by Dr Henry Murphy, Bishop of Limerick, on Sunday 8 March. Correspondence includes telegrams and letters, and comprises of congratulations from other Jesuit houses, the Fr General and the Vatican, as well as from lay organisations, such as the National Bank and An Garda Siochana, and replies to invitations to attend the ceremonies. Also includes the typed transcript of a sermon preached at one of the centenary ceremonies, as well as souvenir programmes for the play 'The Strong are Lonely' by Frtitz Hochwaelder, staged by the Old Crescent Players in February 1959 as part of the centenary celebrations, newspaper reports, and souvenir cards. There is also a handwritten document with the heading 'Centenary', which lists the names and addresses of subscribers and amounts pledged.

Case for Counsel re. proposed purchase of Jones's field

Copy case issued by Dundon & Treacy, solicitors, for William Binchy, BL ‘to advise Jesuit Fathers, Crescent College, Limerick’ in relation to the proposed purchase of a field from the Jones family in Dooradoyle. Gives a history of the Jones holding and of its proposed sale. Asks Counsel to consider the matter and advise Querists accordingly, and to draft an indemnity from Kate and Patrick Jones if he believes that the Querists could be adequately protected by such an indemnity.

Academic successes of individual pupils for the Sacred Heart College, Limerick

Documents regarding the academic achievements of Crescent pupils, including two members of the Doyle family - Daniel and Charles. Includes merit cards awarded to the latter, and a letter regarding a prize in books awarded to the former by the Intermediate Education Board. Also includes a certificate of excellence awarded to Bernard Begg in 1888.
