Remarks 'In 1760 this mission had in Paris a capital of £1000 ster. including the deposits of individuals and what belonged to different residences. By the persecution which ensued the whole was nearly despaired of when by Fr Crookshank's activity and cleverness about half that sum was recovered and transmitted to Ireland where Mr Ward placed it as occasions presented.'

Remarks 'I am happy to tell you that my new researches enable me to trace the direction of (the second wall) and that this direction leaves outside of the city the Holy Sepulchre and Calvary. Concludes 'I will feel very happy if I can put some new weapons in the learned hands of such an apologist as you are and contribute in that way to the defence of our dearest traditions.'

Refers to the books brought back from Paris by Mr O'Grady, and asks Fr Bracken to let him know which ones to keep. Reports on a Novena he participated in, and also on the exercise he has been taking recently.

Letter from John Mitchel, 19 Rue de l'Est, Paris, France to John Edward Pigot commenting on the 'Nation'. Remarks 'Indeed I suspect the Editor of that paper wants to be returned to Parliament through ecclesiastical influence.' Refers to the National Petition. Remarks that he is very confident of the effect it will have. Continues 'I am still very strongly of opinion that the rejection of that Petition ought to be followed up, and that quick, with an address somewhat like what I sent you a draft of - and that the address ought to be- not to mankind in general, but to the Emperor of the French or to the French people.'

Copy of a letter from Lord Emly, 2 Place [Dupray], Paris to Fr William Ronan SJ concerning the Society of Jesus taking over Mungret. Advises Fr Ronan to get the Provincial's approval and Fr Jean-Baptist René SJ to write a letter to Lord Emly offering to take Mungret. Remarks that he needs to get the approval of the other trustees 'You may rely on my giving you every help I can…'

Letter from Máire Ní Bhriain (Máire O'Brien), 43 Mespil Road, Dublin to Fr Edward Cahill SJ concerning the resignation of her post in Madrid after the signing of the Treaty and '...on receiving Gavan Duffy's "Free State" instructions - the carrying out of which would have been entirely against my principles.' Remarks that she was then offered a job on '...Fine Ghaedheal by my former "boss"...Bob Brennan and we are working together very harmoniously linking up the Irish race. Our Free State friends are...trying to smash us as they would smash the Republic and every Irish institution but we are going come out on top in spite of them.

• Includes a letter concerning an official letter received from the Bishop re-affirming that the Society of Jesus had not been restored. Remarks that their property in London is under threat '…Dr Poynter has employed a lawyer to claim our property in London. He has means of succeeding and his success will complete our ruin. We are in fact in a very dangerous crisis.' (23 July 1818, 2pp).
• Includes a letter concerning three scholastics from the English Province he proposes to send to Ireland for their studies. Describes the three (1 September 1818, 3pp).
• Includes a letter referring to a refusal to ordain students from Stonyhurst 'who do not renounce their religious state.' Continues 'very probably a requisition to us all to make such renunciation will soon arrive and this will bring the matter to an issue. Our refusal will be followed by censures, suspension…' ( 10 September 1818, 1p).
• Includes a letter remarking that the Society of Jesus in England has no way of obtaining Holy Orders except by going to Clongowes. Remarks 'The candidates must be adopted there as students of your college in order to be presented by you.' (29 September 1818, 2pp, incomplete).

Their letters and petitions for directions how to act show that they retain the full spirit of their vocation…on the other hand God sends comfort from Vienna, where the Austrian Emperor openly protects the Society and settles it in Gallicia and with generous allowances for subsistence and many privileges and exemptions.' Refers to Fr Kenney's return from America (23 September 1820, 2pp).

Remarks '…the Catholic Bill fills my head, heart and time…In this crisis we must have an agent here…there must be somebody to speak in our cause. File of postcards and notes from the artist, Evie Hone to Fr Daniel Shields SJ (29 September 1941-11 August 1952) in which pleasantries are given and items of news, ‘I expect you heard that Michael Healy died last Mon. I feel very sad for myself but he could not have recovered to work’ (29 September 1941). Evie Hone writes from Kilkenny, Paris and Rathfarnham, Dublin. This material was found in the room of Fr Daniel Shields SJ after his death. Includes a newspaper cutting with an image of Evie Hone and her last stained-glass window, an obituary and a colour sketch of Mary and Child, by Evie Hone.
