Father, Edmond, was Chief Constable in the RIC. and the family then lived in Deerfin House, Deerfin, Ballymena, County Antrim. Mother was Mary Ellen (White).

Eldest of two boys with four sisters.

Early education was at a National School in Ballymena for two years and then at Castleknock College, Dublin for five years.
