Non-Jesuit clerical past pupils: news from and about ex-students of the Crescent

Letters from various clerics (and one novice), who were former pupils of the Crescent. Subjects include memories of schooldays and recent news of ex-classmates. Some refer to accompanying photographs (not included). Includes a letter from Canon John Hayes, founder of Muintir na Tire. Also includes some correspondence involving Sr. F. Stanislaus, Nellie Cantwell and Fr Stephen Bates SJ relating to John Joseph Cantwell, Archbishop of Los Angeles (1936-1947), who was an ex-pupil of the Crescent.

Contains biographical information on various ex-pupils of the Crescent, including two articles on Dr John Joseph Cantwell, Archbishop of Los Angeles, as well as correspondence involving Fr.Peter Halpin SJ, Fr Patrick O'Reilly SJ and Fr Robert Tyndall SJ, on the subject of Fr William Benn SJ, who was an ex-pupil of the Crescent. Also contains some documents relating to Canon John Hayes, founder of Muintir na Tire, as well as material on that organisation. Other material includes newspaper articles reporting on matters involving
ex-pupils of the Crescent, including lectures and television appearances by Fr Thomas Stack C.C., Glendalough, re-unions of old classmates in Limerick, and an article on the Second Vatican Council by Fr Dominic Johnson O.S.B. Also includes a document entitled 'Limerick Jesuits on the Hongkong-Singapore Mission', which contains a brief biography of some Jesuit missioners, some of whom attended the Crescent. In addition, there is a handwritten list of some past pupils from the Crescent who joined the priesthood. Also includes some material, including correspondence, in relation to the celebrations and presentation to mark the Golden Jubilee of Fr. Gerard Guinane SJ in 1967.

Documents concerning Archbishop McQuaid's objections to the formation of a Sandymount-Ballsbridge group of Muintir na Tíre and Fr Edward J Coyne's involvement with the establishment of such a group (See also ADMN/3/29; 37; 39; 57). ‘I am not convinced that this Association has yet proved that it deserves a place in this Diocese, in the country or in the City. Therefore, I have not sanctioned the formation of any group in the Diocese. I should be grateful, if you could give me any help in understanding the Sandymount- Ballsbridge movement.’ (6 November 1941,1p). Includes correspondence between the Archbishop, Irish Fr Provincial and Fr Coyne on the matter. Also includes letter to Irish Fr Provincial from Fr John Hayes, C.C.(Chairman) relating to Muintir na Tíre’s ‘Rural Week’ (29 November 1942, 2pp) and printed advertising leaflets and leaflets concerning National Appeals on behalf of Muintir na Tíre (1940s, 4 items).
