Letter from Fr Carlo Piccirillio SJ, St Peter Canisius House, Rome, Italy to Fr Assistant John Ffrench SJ on presentation of "l'indirizzo e l'obolo del Convitti irlandese" (address and offering) from Clongowes Wood College SJ to Pope Pius IX. He indicated that Pope Pius IX conferred "la facoltà dell'ingulgenza" (the faculty of indulgence) on all the fathers at Clongowes. He also indicates that he will write of this to Fr Daniel Jones SJ, Socius to the Irish Provincial. Fr John Ffrench was Fr General's English Assistant.

Letter from Fr John Ffrench SJ, writing the Gesù, Rome, to Fr Kelly SJ. Refers to a visit made by Cardinal Cullen to Rome, and apologises for not having brought up a matter which Fr Kelly wished him to raise with the Cardinal.

Letter from Fr John Ffrench SJ, English Assistant, Gèsu, Rome to Irish Fr Provincial Nicholas Walsh SJ answering his question to Fr General Peter Beckx concerning Clongowes Wood College SJ debts to the Irish Province. He says that he feels that Clongowes is indebted.

Letter from Fr Torquatus Armellini SJ, writing from Rome, to the Irish Fr Provincial Nicholas Walsh SJ. In reply to the latter's query in relation to the training of a novice master for Ireland. Fr Armellini recommends Fr Van der Hoeven SJ, Rector and Master of novices at Arlon in Belgium. Refers to Fr Walsh’s statement in relation to a villa house in Ireland. Asks Fr Walsh to reply soon to the Fr General in relation to ‘the Diocesan Seminary’; suggests that the Bishop might have changed his mind in relation to handing it over to the Society. Reports on the health of the Pope. Refers to the portraits and drawings of Fr Ffrench, which had not yet arrived in Dublin.

Letter from Fr Torquatus Armellini SJ, writing from Rome, to the Irish Fr Provincial Nicholas Walsh SJ. Refers to the latter’s request for a German or Italian professor. Explains that, with the scholastics out of the Roman College, ‘double professors are required’, and that many have been sent elsewhere. Undertakes to send to Fr Walsh the portrait of Fr. Ffrench ‘in oil colours and with pensil [sic]’. Reports that the previous day they had a procession in the Church of St. Ignatius ‘to place the body of the Bd John Berchmans in the new shrine’. Encloses a photograph of a painting by Gagliardi Junior ‘and offered by F. Rossi to the Augustinian Father who delivered the panegyric of the Bd Peter at the Gesù’.

Refers to a letter from the latter, the subject of which Fr Armellini has communicated to the Fr General. Expresses the hope that Fr Walsh has by now received the painting and drawing of Fr Ffrench, by way of Miss Fleming. Adds that ‘[t]he professor shall not be sent’ until word comes from Fr. Walsh. Encloses small photographs of the portrait (not included). Contains note written by Fr Walsh regarding the content of the letter.

• Includes a letter from Patrick Drinan SJ, Sant' Andrea, Rome describing his life as a novice in the Society of Jesus. Describes his fellow novices (21 March 1825, 3pp).
• Includes a letter from Fr Charles Aylmer SJ, Hardwicke Street, Dublin referring to Fr Matthew Gahan SJ. Remarks that he has returned from the Isle of Man. Continues '…(he has) done much good amongst those poor neglected Catholics. But now they are without a priest and of course will fall back again into the old way.' (28 August 1825, 3pp).
• Includes a letter from Fr Francis Mahony (Prout) concerning his ordination to Deaconship ([ ] 1828, 1p).

Butler of London has published his opinion that Mr O'Connell's admittance to Parliament cannot be refused according to law…' Includes a note from Fr Peter Kenney SJ at the end of the letter concerning the death of Fr Haly's uncle, Robert in Calcutta on 27 July 1826 (30 September, 3pp).

Refers to the church services and remarks that the Parisian Cope made its first appearance and 'dazzled the natives'.
