In 1814, a Jesuit community took over the vacant Poor Clare convent in Hardwicke Street, Dublin. St Francis College was established at Hardwicke Street in 1832 however it proved to be too small for this emerging school. New premises were needed and Belvedere House, Great Denmark Street was bought in 1841.

Documents relating to a report prepared by the Irish Fr Provincial for Fr General on the activities of the Irish Province for ‘the promotion of Catholic Action’. Announces the names of those who have gone to Tronchiennes that year. Reports on his own activities and on Tullabeg. Also refers to the Repeal campaign. Doubts that the plans for a residence in Galway will come to fruition. Refers to the foundation of a College for Foreign Missions in Dublin, and announces the death of Fr Kearney. Asks if his correspondent might be disposed to go to Colombia to educate and carry out missionary work, as the population of Bogotà wish European Jesuits to do. Also refers to the political situation in Ireland.

Letter from Fr John Grene SJ, Clongowes, to l’Abbé McDonald, [Fr John MacDonald SJ], Louvain. Gives news from Clongowes in relation to both the Community and school, including the progress of the Sodality, plays staged by the students, a meet of the provincial consultors etc. Also reports on Gardiner Street; the progress of building work in St Francis Xavier Church, and the Community there.
Also reports on political and social issues, including Daniel O’Connell’s activities in relation to Repeal, the campaign against landlords, the Lord Lieutenant’s policies, Peel’s new taxes. Refers to Belvedere, which he visited on a recent trip to Dublin, as ‘a splendid Mansion’. Also refers to a letter received from ‘Mr. Cooper of Calcutta’, which gives news of that part of the world.

Letter from Fr John Grene SJ, Clongowes, to l’Abbé McDonald, [Fr John MacDonald SJ], Louvain. Reports on the opening of Belvedere House, and on Fr Kenney’s progress on his way to Rome. Praises the students at Clongowes, and refers to new arrangements made for the Prefectship. Reports on other events involving the Community and the school, including the opening of the Debating Society, and a visit by the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Daniel O’Connell.

Letter from Fr George Porter SJ, writing from Fiesole, to Irish Fr Provincial James Tuite SJ. Replies to the latter's query about four newly canonized saints. Refers to the death of Fr O'Neill of Belvedere House. Discusses the ‘University College question’, and the Fr General’s opinions on it. Suggests that it be built by subscription on the limited liability principle. Also refers to Fr Weld and the Zambesi Mission, and to Fr Tuite's offer to send Thomas Manning and Thomas Curry there. Reports that Fr de Wit was killed when he fell off his horse, and that Fr Dupelchi has broken his leg.

Letter from Fr Edward Kelly, SJ, Rector, Clongowes Wood College SJ, written from Belvedere College SJ, to Irish Fr Provincial James Tuite SJ concerning the financial difficulties of Clongowes. Expresses his extreme disappointment that the loan is not forthcoming despite two consultations and permission granted by Fr General Peter Beckx. Remarks that he cannot understand why Fr John Grene SJ has interfered in the matter (Fr Kelly was a Provincial Consultor of longstanding at this time; Fr John Grene was the Province Procurator at this time).
