The file relates to the financial difficulties experienced by Louisa McCann following the death of her husband, due in part, to the failure of the trustees of her marriage settlement to ensure that £20,000 was put in trust for her widowhood. Her brother Robert Kieran acted as her solicitor. However, it would appear from correspondence between Louisa and her brother Robert and Fr Kieran SJ that Louisa and Robert fell out with each other and she eventually asked Fr Kieran SJ to act as mediator and to look after the legalities of the estate. Includes a letter from Louisa McCann, Teltown, Donaghpatrick, Navan, County Meath to Fr Kieran, S.J. Remarks '...Bob's behaviour has certainly been awful and his letters all trumped up nonsense...he knows my unfortunate position and is taking advantage of it...I could not have believed he would have turned on me as he has done...I have you at any rate - otherwise I am really a very desolate creature now - struggling hard to pull along and trying not to be a burden on anyone.' Are you any the better now do you think for having inflicted this pain upon one who is poor, defenceless and alone in the world, and do you really believe that in doing this act you have given good example to your children?' Medal of the Order of the Crown (Ordre de la Couronne), class Officier, conferred by the King of Belgium to Irish Fr Provincial Thomas V Nolan SJ. The medal in case, with name of Fernanrd Heremans, Schaerbeek, is a five-armed white enamel and silver-gilt Maltese cross with silver-gilt graduated rays between the arms, on green enamel oval laurel wreath suspension; the face with a gilt-edged circular central blue enamel medallion bearing the gilt crown of Belgium; the reverse with a gilt-edged circular central blue enamel medallion bearing the cipher of King Leopold II, founder of the Order. A file relating to the 'Bruton Controversy/Debt'. In February 1884, Dr Bruton, a Dublin merchant transferred, to the Apostolic School, Mungret, a debt of £869.2.6 owed to him by Clongowes. According to Bruton's document of transfer, Clongowes was to pay the debt within a reasonable time, and, pending the payment of the principal sum was to pay, in addition, 3% yearly interest to the Apostolic School. Clongowes refused to pay the principal sum or the interest Includes a letter from Irish Fr Provincial Thomas V. Matters covered in these letters have to do with his writings, and the censorship of same by the Society before publication; the circumstances of and a request to assist his brother Mr Charles Boyd-Barrett; the setting up of the "Clongowes Social Work Club'. Included also is a letter of approval for one article from Fr Dominic Kelly SJ, who had acted as one of the censors. Mr Edward J Boyd Barrett was a scholastic on Regency at Clongowes Wood College SJ during this period of the letters.

A file of letters from Mr Aubrey Gwynn SJ, Clongowes Wood College SJ to Fr Provincial Thomas V Nolan SJ, mostly written from Clongowes Wood College SJ, and one from Plater's Hall, Oxford. He writes mostly about maintaining a relationship with Oxford, by having his name entered on the "books" at Oxford, as well as confirmation of his award of a B.Litt. at Oxford, and the award of the "Cromer Prize" at Oxford. At the time of writing, Mr Gwynn had just returned from private study at Oxford University and was engaged in Regency at Clongowes.

Mr Johnson is suggesting that he sped some time in Galway, in order to get a good start. Mr Johnson was a scholastic at Clongowes Wood College SJ on Regency at this time (27 May 1914, 4pp);

Letter from Fr William O'Keeffe SJ to Irish Fr Provincial Thomas V Nolan SJ suggesting that since the current Prefect of Studies Fr James Daly is to be absent, then Fr Provincial should appoint Fr Dominic Kelly SJ as "full" replacement Prefect of Studies, rather than that task being shared by Fr Kelly and Fr Rector, Nicholas J Tomkin SJ (September 1914, 4pp);
7. Letter from Fr David Gallery SJ to Irish Fr Provincial Thomas V Nolan SJ representing his misgivings about Fr Provincial's desire to send him to Malta. Fr Gallery perceives it as some sort of "punishment" for an unknown transgression (21 June, 1915, 4pp);

In this he raises a general question about gossip mongering in the community and Province and its damaging effects. He also encourages Fr Provincial to send Mr Maurice Dowling SJ and Mr Matthew Bodkin, current Regents to Theology. In the case of Mr Bodkin, Fr Meaney suggests that an unhelpful relationship between Mr Bodkin and the Rector, Fr John Joy SJ, is having a negative effect on Mr Bodkin (29 June 1926, 6pp);
14. Letter from Fr Charles Barrett SJ to Irish Fr Provincial John R MacMahon SJ concerning the "Clongowes Certificate" and its recognition by the Registration Council. Fr Barrett was prefect of Studies at Clongowes Wood College SJ at the time. The "Clongowes Certificate" allowed Jesuit scholastics to do the equivalent of the Higher Diploma in Education at Clongowes, and taught by approved Jesuit teachers (12 August 1942, 1p).

A file of letters from Fr Stephen J Brown SJ, Clongowes Wood College SJ to Fr Provincial Thomas V Nolan SJ. Many are undated, but must date from 1917 when Fr Brown went to work in Clongowes. He was made a House Consultor and editor of 'The Clongownian' in 1918, so undated letters which refer to 'The Clongownian' or are sent as a biannual required House Consultor, though undated, must date from 1918. Some of these letters concern Fr Brown's writing as a House Consultor. A number refer to his editorship of 'The Clongownian', and in particular raising the question of how much or little prominence should be given to the "past" WWI dead, given the political sensitivities of the time. One letter refers specifically to the publication of a book entitled "Ireland in Fiction", which was subsequently published by Maunsell, Dublin, 1916.

A file of letters from Fr Richard Golding SJ, Clongowes Wood College SJ to Irish Fr Provincial Thomas V Nolan SJ concerning Irish. Fr Golding writes on the topic of "Fr Provincial's Medal for Irish Essay" awarded at Clongowes Wood College SJ. Most of these letters are correspondence about which topics might best be chosen on which the essay might be written. The winning essay is published in the "The Clongownian" each year, which was being edited by Fr Gerald Corr SJ, who is mentioned a number of times in this capacity. Fr Golding was teacher of Irish in Clongowes at the time.

A file of letters from Fr Patrick J Connolly SJ to Irish Fr Provincial Thomas V Nolan SJ proposing to develop a "Social Action Series" of pamphlets, to be produced by the "Irish Messenger Office", as well as publishing his own MS in book form. Included among the letters is a "Statement of Case" for the "Social Action Series", as well as a "proofed" extract by a censor.

A file of letters from Fr Nicholas J Tomkin SJ, Rector, Clongowes Wood College SJ to Irish Fr Provincial concerning community matters at Clongowes Wood College SJ. These letters include Fr Tomkin informing or requesting assistance from Fr Nolan in the ordinary business and administration of the College and Community. They include health issues relating to members of the community, in particular Fr James Daly SJ, as well as an outbreak of scarlatina and how they are managing. He also raises some financial matters, including the sponsorship of Mr Edward Boyd-Barrett's "Clongowes Social Club", a request for assistance in collecting unpaid fees, and a desire to support some local people in difficulty. Included also are various issues which arose in relation to staff in the house, garden and on the farm. Included are some references to the past, in particular those who were engaged in or died in the First World War, about whom there was a great deal of compassion, and yet a desire to be sensitive to the political realities of the day in Ireland. There was also some discussion about the setting up of some kind of cadet corps in the school, and there were widely divergent views on this topic in the community.

Following the Clongowes community "Villa" in 1933, Fr Finucane writes some reflections on what he considered a lax approach to life while on vacation, and that some rules should be established more clearly. Attached to the second letter (21 July 1933) he proposes some rules to Irish Fr Provincial.

Remarks that their property in London is under threat '…Dr Poynter has employed a lawyer to claim our property in London. He has means of succeeding and his success will complete our ruin. We are in fact in a very dangerous crisis.' (23 July 1818, 2pp).
• Includes a letter concerning three scholastics from the English Province he proposes to send to Ireland for their studies. Describes the three (1 September 1818, 3pp).
• Includes a letter referring to a refusal to ordain students from Stonyhurst 'who do not renounce their religious state.' Continues 'very probably a requisition to us all to make such renunciation will soon arrive and this will bring the matter to an issue. Our refusal will be followed by censures, suspension…' ( 10 September 1818, 1p).
• Includes a letter remarking that the Society of Jesus in England has no way of obtaining Holy Orders except by going to Clongowes. Remarks 'The candidates must be adopted there as students of your college in order to be presented by you.' (29 September 1818, 2pp, incomplete).

Refers to Spain, remarks 'In Spain all seems to be lost for the Society excepting their religious spirit. Their letters and petitions for directions how to act show that they retain the full spirit of their vocation…on the other hand God sends comfort from Vienna, where the Austrian Emperor openly protects the Society and settles it in Gallicia and with generous allowances for subsistence and many privileges and exemptions.' Refers to Fr Kenney's return from America (23 September 1820, 2pp).
• Includes a letter referring to the sudden introduction of the Catholic Bill. Remarks '…the Catholic Bill fills my head, heart and time…In this crisis we must have an agent here…there must be somebody to speak in our cause. The General must decide this point before Easter, and he go with me to the Pope...' (7 April 1821, 3pp).

Letters from Fr Charles Mulcahy SJ, Rector, Clongowes Wood College SJ to Irish Fr Provincial Thomas V Nolan SJ concerning community matters at Clongowes Wood College SJ. These letters include Fr Mulcahy informing or requesting assistance from Fr Nolan in the ordinary business and administration of the College and Community. They include health issues relating to members of the community, teachers and staff, as well as performance in examinations. There is also a letter discussing the expulsion of a pupil, Redmond O'Regan. In addition there is a personal letter regarding Mr Edward Coyne SJ, who was experiencing some difficulties at Rathfarnham Castle (Fr Mulcahy knew him well, having been his Novice Master).

Letters from Fr Joseph Flinn SJ to Irish Fr Provincial Thomas V. Nolan SJ concerning boys who wish to join the Society of Jesus and money from his father to erect a memorial in Clongowes boys chapel in honour of Fr Flinn's mother.

Letters concerning the relationship between the Society of Jesus and the Legion of Mary and the Legion’s 1943 Dundalk Missionary Display. Includes letters to the Irish Fr Provincial from Archbishop McQuaid.

A file of letters between Irish Frs Provincial Laurence Kieran and John R MacMahon and Clongowes Wood College SJ regarding communications with the Department of Defence. The mater being considered was one where the Deptartment of Defence sought to use Clongowes as a place for storage of equipment, and in the event of an emergency, that a part of it might be used as a hospital. The advice was that Clongowes should not invite the Department of defence in, but they might have no choice. Initial letters are between Fr Fergal McGrath SJ, Rector, Clongowes Wood College SJ and Irish Fr Provincial L Kieran SJ as well as with Commandant PJ Delaney of the Department of Defence. Fr McGrath also sought the advice of his House Consultors, Fr William Dargan SJ, Henry King SJ and Cyril Power SJ. Subsequent letters were exchanged between Fr William Dargan SJ - who had been deputed to negotiate with the Ministers of Defence, Mr Oscar Traynor and Mr Francis Aiken, along with Irish Fr Provincial John R MacMahon SJ.

In the event of an "emergency", the Provincial had wanted that Jesuit community members from Milltown Park and Rathfarnham Castle might be accommodated at Clongowes, along with the local community, and remaining staff and students. This was eventually accepted by the Department of Defence, as only a small portion of the buildings would be required to function as a hospital.

Letter written on behalf of Fr Robert Haly SJ, from Clongowes Wood College, Clane, County Kildare to Mr George [Sallery] concerning a vacancy to carry out indoor manual work at Clongowes. Offers the position to him.

Letter to Fr William A Sutton SJ from his brother, Sir Abraham Sutton following the publication of 'The Clongownian' in June 1921, containing a photograph of him (Sir Abraham), following his election as President of the Clongowes Union, for 1920 – 1921, and an appreciation (p.120 – 121). States in his letter ‘Dont fail to read 'The Clongownian'. You will be amazed to read about your younger brother as indeed he was to read about himself.…I suspect who wrote it but I am not quite certain. It is artistically done but much over laudatory. You cried when I returned to the world but Providence decreed otherwise for there were many family matters that required my special attention. Just think I entered my 73rd year on last Monday. Oh how short they appear now!’

Letter to Fr Fergal McGrath SJ (Province Archivist, 1975 to 1986) from Fr Roland Burke Savage SJ (Clongowes Wood College), concerning the holograph manuscript of Hopkins’s 'St. Thecla' which Fr Burke-Savage discovered ‘while cleaning out Fr [Patrick] Connolly’s room (in St Ignatius, House of Writers, 35 Lower Leeson Street) when he was in (St.) Vincent’s having his leg set about 1948…I got leave from Engl(ish) Provincial to keep it on permanent loan.’

Letter of thanks from Dr Edward Thomas O'Dwyer, Bishop of Limerick to Fr Provincial James Murphy SJ for documents received relating to Religious Education as exercised at Clongowes Wood College SJ.

Letter from S.F. O'Mahony, Seminaire du Grand, Montrouge, Paris to his father (Martin Mahony) on the question of where he shall minister ‘…it is of no Consequence that I serve my God in one climate preferably to another provided I accomplish faithfully his ever adorable will, all I ask is to be allowed to follow his voice which evidently calls me to the Society, and of that you can entertain no reasonable doubt. The rest is not essential, so I abandon it to whatever dispositions may be made by you and my Superiors. As I am of an age at which tis customary in France to receive the Ecclesiastical tonsure, I hope you will have no objection to my contracting this preliminary obligation to persevere, begging you to obtain the necessary documents from Our Bishop to whose prayers I wish to be recommended.…I received two letters from the Clongonians but decline answering as I feel every day more & more the necessity of absolute retirement and complete sequestration to enable myself to meet with some confidence the serious duties which will be one day incumbent on me & which I learn in my solitude to appreciate.’ On reverse is a letter in French, by Fr Jean Baptiste Gury SJ, Master of Novices, Montrouge, Paris, France to the father of S.F. O'Mahony regarding his son's entry into the Society.

Letter from P. Turner, [Staplestown], County Kildare to Fr Edward Kelly SJ, Clongowes Wood College, County Kildare. Asks on behalf of James Hanlon, for permission to use ground at Mainham, formerly used by the Jesuit community for burials, as a burial ground for his own family.

Letter from Mr William Power SJ to a Jesuit friend seeking advice. Mr Power was a scholastic on regency at this time, and he was experiencing difficulty in his relationship with the Fr Robert Carbery SJ, Rector, Clongowes Wood College SJ.

Letter from Mr Stewart Fitzpatrick, Intermediate Education Board for Ireland, 1 Hume Street, Dublin to Fr James Daly SJ, Prefect of Studies at Clongowes Wood College SJ, concerning the calculation of the teacher's salaries grant. There is a personal note in the first paragraph, and he also remarks, confidentially, near the end "You will thus see that your college tops its rivals of the CSSp." (2pp).

Letter from Mr John Burke, Macken's Hotel, Dawson Street to Mr Daniel O'Connell, politician of Merrion Square asking him to pass on £28.15, in respect of fees - less expenses - for the education of his sons, to Fr Peter Kenney SJ, Clongowes Wood College SJ

Letter from Michael Slattery, Archbishop of Cashel, to Fr Peter Kenney SJ, Clongowes. Asks the latter to give a retreat to the clergy of Cashel diocese the following July.

Letter from Luke Duff, Trinity College to Luke J McDonnell at Clongowes Wood College SJ describing his life at Trinity College, Dublin. He refers to two young women named Lu and Emma and recounts his meeting with the latter even though he knows the reader is anxious of news about Lu! Remarks 'The very next time I see Lu you shall have the whole particulars.'

Letter from Lord Cloncurry (Valentine Lawless), possibly to Fr Robert Daly, Rector, or Fr Paul Ferley, Prefect of Studies - praising Clongowes Wood College SJ.

Letter from London (Mull..) to Fr Rector, Clongowes Wood College SJ concerning bequest of £500 which he promises to send in a matter of days (21 January ....)

Letter from Joseph Quirke, Endwood Court, Handsworth Wood, Birmingham to Fr Gerald Corr SJ reminiscing positively on his days at Tullabeg and Clongowes. Fr Corr was a teacher and editor of 'The Clongownian' at this time. He is writing on the occasion of the 100 year anniversary of Clongowes.

Letter from Joseph K O'Connor KC, Castlemount, Castleknock, County Dublin, for Fr John O'Meara SJ, Editor of 'The Clongownian' in response to a request from Fr O'Meara for a personal profile to appear in 'The Clongownian', following his elevation to the Circuit Court in 1933. Judge O'Connor was at pains to point out the he was an "old boy" of the Crescent as well as Clongowes. He also gives details of his involvement as a barrister in a number of high profile cases.
